Nagel Langdons tests new vehicle for city logistics in London
Quieter, more flexible, lower-emission – the requirements placed on logistics in big cities are on the up. In order to overcome such challenges, FSDF member Nagel Langdons is testing a modern multi-temperature vehicle in the British capital.
“There are currently various approaches in place across European capitals for cleaner air, lower carbon dioxide, increased safety for cyclists and pedestrians as well as a quieter environment,” says Arran Osman, Managing Director of Nagel Langdons. “We certainly want to play our role while supplying our customers.”
With this in mind, the British subsidiary of the Nagel-Group is testing the Urban Logistics Safety Vehicle from Terberg DTS UK for the first time. In April, the food distributor will be subjecting the multi-temperature vehicle to intensive testing over several days.
The distribution vehicle has been specially designed for city logistics and includes a driver’s cab which the driver can enter or exit safely to and from the driver’s position on either side. For unloading in urban areas, the vehicle offers side and tail gates with lifting platforms, which enables a more flexible delivery based on local conditions. The refrigeration unit is designed to produce fewer emissions and less noise.
“We are also concerned about making London safer. That is why we are interested in the diverse range of safety aspects offered by the vehicle,” explains Tyrone Lanaway, Engineering Manager at Nagel Langdons. The windows of the driver’s cab are larger than comparable vehicles, thus offering a wide field of visibility. Additional sensors provide warnings if people or objects are in the vicinity of the vehicle. As such, manoeuvring in congested areas should become even safer. The 18-tonne vehicle has additional lights and indicators on the outside, so that other road users are able to better detect the intentions of the driver.
The Urban Logistics Safety Vehicle should also be well equipped for emergencies. Further safety features include an emergency button in the driver’s cab, a remotely controlled shutdown function and use of Geofencing, whereby the speed of the vehicle is automatically reduced. “On a daily basis, we send around 30 vehicles into the capital delivering food on behalf of our customers from across the UK and Europe t. In order to ensure efficiency within the supply in the future, we aim to be a step ahead of legal requirements,” says Arran Osman.
