Star Refrigeration apprentice named ACR Trainee of the Year 2018
Third year industrial refrigeration apprentice Tom Woolston won The ACR Trainee of the Year 2018 at an Award ceremony at The Belfry last night.
FSDF member Star Refrigeration engineers have topped off an incredibly successful year with another accolade for one of its top engineering apprentices. Tom Woolston, an industrial refrigeration apprentice, last night won the ACR Trainee of the Year 2018 at a prestigious ceremony. The triumph comes shortly after he won a silver prize in Student of the Year at the RAC Cooling Awards.
Bristol-based Tom Woolston was shortlisted for the esteemed award along with 10 other finalists from around the UK. His hard work and dedication over the last three years at Star were unanimously recognised by the judges, and the apprentice picked up the award at The Belfry in front of hundreds of industry professionals. Tom follows in the footsteps of Sam Gills, who also won ACR Trainee of the Year for Star in 2017.
Tom said, “I was privileged to be nominated for this award by my trainers and employers, and to go on to win the Trainee of the Year is an incredible honour. Attending awards ceremonies is such a fun experience and just one of the many perks of working for an organisation such as Star Refrigeration. Thank you to the whole team for supporting me on my learning journey.”
Since joining Star Refrigeration, Tom became a valuable member of the engineering team at the company’s branch in Bristol, assisting with a variety of tasks from maintenance visits on large industrial ammonia refrigeration systems to reactive works on a variety of refrigeration systems, including those charged with CO2 and HFC refrigerants.
Tom’s lecturer and assessor at Eastleigh College, Shaun Creech, said, “Having spoken with Tom’s employer, I wasn’t really surprised that they all hold him in such regard. Tom is a pleasure to teach, as he really wants to learn. Watching young men like him moving into our industry fills me with pride, knowing that we are helping to produce good quality engineers going forward in to the future.”
Star offers an impressive apprenticeship scheme for motivated youngsters who aspire to be the refrigeration engineers of the future. As one of the highly sought after apprenticeships in the industry, Star’s apprentices across the UK have recently received accolades at the Worldskills UK awards, RAC Cooling Awards and the IOR Scotland Apprentice of the Year Awards. Star’s apprentice success has been rounded off by the ACR Trainee of the Year triumph.
Andy Butler, National Operations Training Facilitator of Star Refrigeration said, “This has been an amazing year for Star’s apprentices who have been recognised across a number of industry events. This shows Star’s commitment to ‘Developing Young People’ – one of our five strategic values guiding the company’s vision. We are in business to secure a better future by using the best people, systems and technology to deliver quality temperature solutions – and our training plays a huge part in being the best in the business.”
He added, “Many congratulations to Tom who is a worthy winner of this award. We wish him all the best for his future career and know we can expect big things from him as a fully qualified engineer.”
